For the Federal Government, "notices of contract actions are arranged by Classification Codes (Federal Supply Classification: FSC). The classification codes are divided into two primary groups: Service and Supply".

Be aware that "only the Contracting Officer that issued the notice is authorized to determine the classification code. Because a misclassified notice of a contract action fails to effectively notify the firms most likely to respond and therefore violates the Competition in Contracting Act and the Contracting Officer would be held responsible, for additional information see Comptroller General Decision No. B-228744, dated November 12, 1987".
